I wrote a piece a few months back arguing that the Fitbit Air wasn't the WHOOP killer everyone wanted it to be. The core of that argument was that you can't evaluate a recovery tracker from press photos, and that Google was starting from zero on recovery-specific data no matter how big its war chest was.
Today's Apple announcement is a different animal, and I want to be honest about that.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 landed with a redesigned health sensing system, and the software on top of it reads like someone at Apple Park printed out WHOOP's marketing site and worked down the list. A daily readiness score. A Health Age that compares your body to your birthday. HRV sampled continuously, day and night, against your own baseline. These aren't adjacent features. These are the exact three things WHOOP users talk about when someone asks them why they pay a subscription for a screenless bracelet.
So no, I'm not going to do the "nothing to see here" routine. This one is aimed directly at WHOOP's chest. But I'm also not taking my band off, and I think the reasons why are more interesting than the announcement itself.
What Apple Actually Shipped
The hardware story is the sensor stack. Apple redesigned the optical array — photodiodes arranged in a ring, bigger and more efficient green LEDs, a larger electrode surface for ECG — and claims it's the most accurate heart rate tracking of any wearable, validated against ECG chest straps during running, cycling, and HIIT.
What that sensor unlocks is sampling frequency, and that's the part that matters:
- Heart rate every five seconds, all day. Apple says that's 60× more often than before.
- HRV up to 24× more often — as frequently as every five minutes — split into an overall HRV read and a dedicated "recovery HRV."
- Overnight vitals now include recovery HRV measured against your personal baseline, plus a daytime vitals view for watching it move in real time.
On top of that sits Readiness: a single 0–10 score each morning, built from recent activity, training load, vitals, and your sleep score, with a plain-language call — Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. It updates through the day as new data arrives. Apple says the algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study, with exercise scientists and physicians in-house.
And in the redesigned iPhone Health app, a Longevity tab with Health Age — VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep, and HRV combined into a number you compare against your actual age, with optional A1c and LDL lab values layered in to sharpen it. Apple will happily sell you those lab values, too, which is the part of this announcement that got the least attention and deserves more.
If you've used WHOOP, you just read a description of Recovery, Strain, Sleep Score, and WHOOP Age with different nouns.
The Fitbit Air Argument, With Much More Teeth
Here's what I said about Google, and it applies double to Apple: the thing that actually wins this category isn't the sensor. It's the longitudinal dataset you use to turn sensor noise into a number a person will change their training around.
The difference is that Google was starting that flywheel. Apple has been spinning it since 2019. The Apple Heart and Movement Study has hundreds of thousands of enrolled participants contributing continuous wrist data alongside health outcomes, and Apple named it explicitly as the source for the Readiness algorithm. That's not a company buying its way in. That's a company cashing a check it started writing seven years ago.
Add the installed base. Apple has somewhere north of 100 million people wearing these things. WHOOP has never disclosed a subscriber number that comes anywhere close. Every model iteration Apple ships gets validated against a population WHOOP cannot assemble at any price, and the gap compounds — more wearers means better baselines, better baselines mean a better score, a better score means more wearers.
That's the flywheel argument, and this time the flywheel is already turning at speed. WHOOP should be concerned. I'd be concerned.
Apple Went After WHOOP Labs Too — Using WHOOP's Own Lab Partner
Here's the piece I almost skipped over. Health Age isn't purely wearable-derived, and Apple isn't waiting for you to go find bloodwork on your own. In the US, Apple is offering a Quest Diagnostics panel covering 50+ biomarkers for $119 — booked inside the Health app, drawn at one of roughly 2,000 Quest patient service centers, with results flowing back into Health automatically. Cardiometabolic and organ-function markers, plus biometrics like blood pressure and waist and hip circumference.
Now read the description of WHOOP Advanced Labs: blood panels booked inside the WHOOP app, drawn at one of 2,000+ Quest Diagnostics locations, with results delivered back into the app.
Same lab. Same draw sites. Apple went and signed WHOOP's own vendor.
On price, though, it's closer than the headlines suggest — and not in the direction you'd assume. Here's what WHOOP actually charges today:
- Basic Health Panel — $69, 53 biomarkers (glucose, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, liver and kidney markers)
- Comprehensive Health Panel — $199/test, 75 biomarkers (adds HbA1c, ApoB, insulin, cortisol, free testosterone, homocysteine, TSH); as low as $150 per test at 4+ tests
- Specialized Panels — $299 each, 77–90 biomarkers (heart, metabolic, performance, men's, women's)
- Galleri multi-cancer early detection — $799, screening for 50+ cancer types
So Apple's $119 lands almost exactly between WHOOP's two foundational panels. It is not the cheapest way to get bloodwork — WHOOP's Basic panel is $50 less for a comparable 53 markers, and it includes the LDL that Apple specifically called out. Apple's Comprehensive-tier equivalent doesn't exist; the two markers Apple named, A1c and LDL, sit in WHOOP's $199 and $69 panels respectively.
What Apple is actually doing isn't undercutting. It's bundling. The $119 is a one-time purchase, no subscription, landing in an app that's already on the phone of every person reading this. There's no second ecosystem to join, no membership to evaluate, no separate brand relationship. For the enormous population that has never once considered ordering their own blood panel, Apple just removed every step between "I wonder" and "it's scheduled." That's a distribution advantage, and it's the same one I described above with Readiness.
What WHOOP still has here is depth and interpretation. Every Advanced Labs panel comes with clinician review, a Clinical Report, and an Action Plan, and — this is the actual thesis — results are read against your own wearable baseline rather than a population reference range. An LDL number means something different for someone whose HRV, sleep, and resting heart rate WHOOP has been tracking for two years. Apple has the wearable data to eventually do the same thing, but today Health Age consumes A1c and LDL as inputs to a score. It isn't a clinician-reviewed plan, and there's no equivalent to the specialized hormone, metabolic, or cardiac panels, let alone Galleri.
And the timing here is worth sitting with. On August 18 — three weeks before this announcement — WHOOP dropped the membership requirement for Advanced Labs entirely. You can now buy WHOOP bloodwork without owning a WHOOP, and they added Galleri at the same time. Somebody in Boston saw this coming and moved to make the labs business stand on its own before Apple showed up. That's not a company getting caught flat-footed.
(One practical caveat on WHOOP's side: Advanced Labs isn't available in Arizona, Hawaii, Wyoming, North Dakota, or South Dakota, though you can test out of state. Both are HSA/FSA eligible.)
Four Reasons I'm Not Switching Yet
1. The battery still ends your day
Series 12 gets you up to 24 hours of everyday use. The Ultra 4 does better — up to 50 hours, or 84 in Low Power Mode — but the Ultra is $799 and the size of a hockey puck.
My WHOOP 5.0 goes 14+ days, and when it does need power I slide the battery pack on and keep wearing it. I have never once taken it off to charge.
That difference sounds like a convenience thing. It isn't. A recovery model is only as good as its continuity — the whole premise is a personal baseline built from uninterrupted 24/7 data. Every Apple Watch owner I know charges in the same window: while they shower, or while they're getting ready for bed. Which means the hole in your data lands right at the edge of your sleep, in the exact window where recovery HRV is most informative. Apple sped up charging enough to paper over it (15 minutes buys 12 hours on Series 12), but "top it up daily" and "never think about it" are different relationships with a device you're supposed to wear continuously for months.
2. It's a screen, and screens want things from you
The reason WHOOP works on me is that it can't interrupt me. No display, no apps, no notifications, no watch face I redesign at 11pm. It collects data and shuts up until I open the app on purpose.
An Apple Watch is a wonderful device that is also a wrist-mounted attention tax. Texts, Slack, calendar nudges, rings closing, and now Siri chiming in with recaps. If you're the kind of person who buys a recovery tracker to be more deliberate about your body, strapping a notification firehose to the same wrist is a strange way to go about it. I've made a longer version of this argument before — WHOOP isn't a fitness watch, and the absence of a screen is a feature, not a spec sheet gap.
3. Nobody actually wants to wear a watch to bed
Sleep is where recovery data is made, so the device has to be on your wrist for eight hours while you're unconscious. A 46mm slab of glass and aluminum — or 49mm of titanium on the Ultra — is a genuinely awkward thing to sleep in. It snags sheets. It clunks against a partner. It presses into your wrist when you sleep on your side.
WHOOP is a fabric band with a sensor puck. I forget it exists. I've worn one through martial arts and through the night without thinking about it, and if you want the wrist free entirely there's a whole ecosystem of bicep and torso options. Apple has no answer here, and it's not a software problem they can patch. It's physics.
4. The privacy math just got worse
This is the one I keep turning over.
WHOOP knows your heart rate. That's essentially it — a pulse, a wrist temperature, some motion. It doesn't know where you are, and it can't hear you.
An Apple Watch has always known where you are, which is a genuine plus for running and cycling — GPS is the single biggest thing WHOOP is missing, and I've argued they should ship a GPS module to fix it. But as of today, the watch also listens. The new Audio Intelligence suite includes Live Rewind (replay the last 15 seconds of a conversation) and Siri Recap (ambient listening that takes running notes on the conversations around you).
Apple has done the engineering work here, and it deserves credit for it: audio flows into a buffer inside the Secure Exclave on the S11, old audio is continuously overwritten, no recordings are stored, transcripts are end-to-end encrypted, speakers aren't identified, and Live Rewind fires an audible chime and a full-screen indicator even on silent. Siri Recap is opt-in and can be fenced to specific hours. Apple published a whole privacy paper on it. This is about as carefully as anyone could ship this feature.
It's still a microphone on your body that can summarize the room, and TechCrunch's read — that these features normalize the idea that technology is always listening — lands for me. The people around you didn't opt in, and two-party consent laws don't care how good your secure enclave is.
For a device whose entire job is to tell me whether to do intervals or take a walk, the amount of surface area I'm handing over keeps expanding. WHOOP asks for a pulse. That trade is easier to evaluate.
One More Thing Working in WHOOP's Favor
Readiness is a Series 12 and Ultra 4 feature. Apple listed it only for the two new watches, and hasn't said whether any part of it reaches Series 9, 10, or 11 — all of which get watchOS 27 on September 14.
That matters for the installed-base argument I made above. The flywheel is real, but it's throttled by an upgrade cycle. Apple's hundred-million-wearer advantage on readiness specifically starts today at roughly zero and builds over the two-to-three years it takes people to replace their watches. Health Age is broader — it works across compatible watches, though the Longevity tab needs an Apple Intelligence–capable iPhone — but the direct WHOOP analogue, the daily score, is gated behind a $399 (or $799) purchase.
WHOOP has a window. Not a wide one, but a real one.
Where Apple Genuinely Wins
Let me not be a homer about this.
If you already own an Apple Watch and you're paying WHOOP $199–$359 a year for One, Peak, or Life, Apple just handed you a large fraction of what you're paying for at no additional cost. For a lot of casual users, that's the whole calculation, and they'd be right to make it.
Apple also wins on GPS outright, on ECG availability without a top-tier subscription, on the ability to actually see your data on your wrist mid-workout, and — if the chest-strap validation holds up under independent testing — possibly on raw heart rate accuracy during hard efforts, which is the one place WHOOP's optical sensor has historically struggled. The Ultra 4's Extended Workout modes (25 hours with full GPS, 45 in Max) are a real answer for ultra-distance people that WHOOP has nothing comparable to.
And on bloodwork, Apple's advantage isn't the panel — it's the absence of friction. WHOOP got to clinician-reviewed labs first and still offers more of them, but ordering a blood panel from an app you already have, with no membership decision attached, will reach a hundred times more people than ordering one from a company whose bracelet you'd have to buy first. Apple is walking toward the same holistic-longevity position WHOOP has been building, and the clinical-records integration in Health gets them there with less friction than WHOOP can manufacture.
The Bottom Line
Everything I said about the Fitbit Air still holds procedurally: nobody should make a hardware decision on announcement day. Wait for independent HRV correlation testing. Wait for someone to wear both for sixty days and publish how the two readiness models behave during illness, travel, and a real training block. A score that's directionally wrong during your first cold is worse than no score.
But strategically, this is not the Fitbit Air. Apple has the sensor, the dataset, the distribution, the feature parity, and a blood panel booked at WHOOP's own lab. WHOOP's moat was never the hardware — it was the model, the labs business being built behind it, and the wear pattern. Apple just came for the first two. The wear pattern is what's left.
Which is why my honest answer, for now, is that the band stays on. Fourteen days of battery, nothing on my wrist that can interrupt me, something I can actually sleep in, and a device that only knows my heartbeat. Apple hasn't beaten any of those four. They've built a better watch — and I already wear both, which is probably the real answer for most people reading this.
Ask me again in eighteen months, when Readiness has a couple of million wrists of feedback behind it. That's the conversation that actually decides this.
